Mnemba is one of the most loved ocean trips in Zanzibar, and for good reason. The water around the atoll is clear, calm on good days and full of colourful marine life.
We run this trip privately almost every day. Here is what the day really looks like, so you know exactly what to expect.
1. Can you visit Mnemba Island itself?
Mnemba Island is private, so landing on the island is not allowed. The trip explores the protected waters and reefs around it, and that is where the magic is anyway.
2. Where the trip starts: Muyuni Beach
We pick you up from your hotel around 8:00 AM and drive to Muyuni Beach on the northeast coast. From there, a boat takes you out towards Mnemba.
3. Looking for dolphins

The first stop is the dolphin area. Sightings are never guaranteed, but chances are good (around 70%), and when the dolphins appear calmly you may even get to swim near them.
4. Snorkeling the Mnemba reefs

Next, we head to the reefs off Mnemba for snorkeling in crystal-clear water. Look out for anemone fish, starfish, sea cucumbers and many colourful reef fish, while tasting fresh tropical fruits on the boat.
Snorkeling equipment is included, and your local guide stays with you the whole time.
5. Sandbank time and lunch
After snorkeling, relax on the sandbank and take beautiful pictures of this marine conservation area. If you choose the lunch option, we then move to the lunch place before returning to your hotel around 1:00 PM.
Please tell us in advance if you don’t eat seafood, so we can prepare according to your preference.
6. What to bring
Swimwear, a towel, reef-friendly sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a waterproof phone pouch or camera. Bring a light layer for the boat ride and some cash for personal extras.
7. Book your Mnemba day
The half-day Mnemba trip is private, with hotel pick-up, boat, entrance fees, equipment, fruits and a guide included. You can also combine Mnemba with the Natural Aquarium and Kendwa Beach for a full day.
