The Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a popular tourist destination located off the coast of Stone Town in Zanzibar. Originally intended to be a prison for rebellious slaves in the 1860s, it was later repurposed as a quarantine center for yellow fever victims by the British.

Overview

Prison Island is the famous tourist attraction and it known for its giant tortoises. You have the chances of interacting with these giant tortoises, some of which are over a hundred years old.

The tortoises are called the Aldabra Giant Tortoises and they are the major tourist attraction. These tortoises can grow up to 122 cm in length and weigh around 250 kg. They are among the longest-lived animals globally, with some individuals estimated to be nearly 200 years old. Originally brought from Seychelles in the 18th century as a gift, their population has grown over time.

Aside from the giant tortoises, visitors to Prison Island can enjoy activities such as relaxing on the sandy beach, and exploring the forested interior where they can encounter various bird species, peacocks, bats, and butterflies. The island offers a tranquil setting for tourists to unwind and appreciate its natural beauty and historical significance.
